Just one letter is missing – but it’s enough to send parishioners rocking in the pews with laughter. Typographical errors (or typos) in church magazines and service sheets always seem to sneak under the righteous radar. The word may be spelled correctly but, critically, it’s the wrong word.
Below are 10 genuine examples, sent in by readers of
Ship of Fools
, the magazine of Christian unrest, and
Church Service Sheet Typos
, a Facebook page which has gained some 4,700 members since its creation just over a year ago.
Contributor: Barry Whitfield discovers heresy in a hymn.
Contributor: Colin Williams. ‘A typo which got past my eagle eye in the reproduction of the Lord's Prayer in the Order for a Marriage Service.’
Contributor: Daisymay sent us this simple typo, in which Beelzebub meets Masterchef.
Contributor: Paul Morley. ‘Some years ago, the church I attended was forced to destroy 400 or so service sheets for the Easter Sunday communion. Here's why.'
Contributor: Tim Popple. ‘I’ve come to my daughter's school Christmas concert and, despite the text implying as such, the school is not in fact in Yorkshire.’
Contributor: Paul Morley. One missing letter reduces pews to laughter during the lovely hymn by Horatio Bonar.
A Baptist Church near Ambleside, UK, had the tiniest error in a pew sheet. Participants left the service looking tired and devotional.
A service sheet for Ash Wednesday 2017 was memorable for all the wrong reasons.
Contributor: Leonora Dawson-Bowling was warmed by these words in a service sheet at St Paul's Cathedral.
Contributor: Rosamund Seal snapped this tasty event by All Saints, Holbeach.
